I. INTRODUCTION

Department of Internal Medicine was established in 1957. From 1957 to 1975: The teaching staff consisted of 6 lecturers and trained only full-time general practitioners. From 1975 to now: The department was divided into 8 faculties and carried out many forms of undergraduate training such as full-time, inter-college transfer and postgraduate systems such as Level I and Level II Specialty, Resident, Master, Ph.D. Each lecturer was in charge of teaching.

Department of Internal Medicine is one of the most typical department of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy in terms of training (on Undergraduate and Postgraduate), conducting scientific research, participating in clinical treatment at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy’s Hospital and Hue Central Hospital.

Structure

Up to now, the number of staff of Internal Medicine Department is 38. Department’s staff are well-educated and have sustained academic ranks and degrees. Including 06 Professors; 07 Associate Professors; 03 PhDs; 02 Specialist level II; 12 Masters of Science; 06 medical doctors; 02 Bachelors.

Internal Medicine Department has 01 Chairman and 02 Vice-chairmen. The members of the Chairman Board are responsible for undergraduate and graduate training activities, scientific researches. The department has an assistant group for undergraduate & graduate training; scientific research and educational resources.

Department of Internal Medicine has 07 majors: Cardiovascular Disease, Respiratory, Neurology, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology. Each specialty has a long-term teaching and well academic ranks. In addition, we have concurrent lecturers from clinical Departments belong to University Hospital, Hue Central Hospital, Faculty of Medicine - Da Nang University…

III. EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Undergraduate:

Department of Internal Medicine has been in charge of training for subjects including: General Practitioner, Dentist, Traditional Medicine, Preventive Medicine Doctor, Pharmacist, Nurse, Public Health in transitional and part-time courses. From 2018, Department of Internal Medicine has joined in innovation program that are integrated, competency-based manner for General Medical and Dental Doctors in term of Ministry of Health’s project.

Graduate:

Department of Internal Medicine is responsible for a varieties of graduate training, including:

  • Master of Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine resident Doctors
  • Specialty level I in General Internal Medicine, Neurology
  • Specialty of level II in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Cardiovascular, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Neurology, Geriatrics
  • PhD in Internal Medicine.

IV. RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS

Annually, the Department of Internal Medicine organizes scientific conferences in which the remarkable research works of students or teaching staff have been selected and awarded. Also, many topics have been completed, published and/or reported in local, national, or international conferences. Most of the research has been published in local or national journals.

International Publications in 2019:

  • Plasma asymmetric dimethyl arginine its association with some of cardiovascular disease risk factors in chronic kidney disease.
  • Blood pressure screening during the May Measurement Month 2017 programme in Vietnam, South-East Asia and Australasia.
  • Characterization of point mutations in domain V of 23S rRNA gene of clinical strains of Helicobacter pylori and clarithromycin-resistant phenotype in central Vietnam.
  • Pain incidence, assessment, and management in Vietnam: a cross-sectional study of 12,136 respondents
  • Les habitudes de sommeil chez les étudiants en médecine de la ville d’Huê.
  • Les troubles du sommeil et la somnolence chez les étudiants en médecine de la ville d’Huê.

V. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

The International Cooperation with the Universities from United States, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Korea, Thailand,… play an important part in the development strategy of our department. Annually, we welcome a number of delegations to deliver talks in CME courses and train in depth. Furthermore, a number of young generations have been trained abroad and they also play a role to strengthen the cooperation.

The aim of the Department of Internal Medicine is to create an international academic environment for the students and academic staffs and to promote cooperation with other universities and research institutes abroad, in order to exchange experience and share education, research.
