1. INTRODUCTION

The Department of Medical Genetics was established on November 10th, 2004. Our department has three major tasks:

Teaching the Medical Genetics module in undergraduate and postgraduate training programs
Genetic disorders examining and genetic consulting
Scientific research for Cytogenetics and Molecular genetics applications in medical practice

By 2009, our department has been the main member of Prenatal and Neonatal Screening - Diagnostic Center with the aim of deployment Ministry of Health’s projects, in order to improve population quality. In addition, we have been deployed many patient care activities in medical genetic to be routinely implemented in the hospital such as: karyotyping, Y chromosome microdeletion diagnostic test, SRY gene identifying test, thalassemia test for common mutations, molecular test for antibiotic resistance gene mutations in Helicobacter pylori; performing prenatal and neonatal screening - diagnostic tests and techniques.

After over 15 years of development, the Department of Medical Genetics has grown up due to the line-up of lecturers, medical geneticists, medical technicians, and researchers with a high level of expertise; modern infrastructure and machinery system. Our department has constantly endeavored in training, scientific research as well as genetic disorders examination, genetic consultation, performing screening and diagnostic tests for genetic diseases.

2. ORGANIZATION AND STRUCTURE

3. EDUCATION AND TRAINING

• Undergraduate training program: Teaching for students from Medicine including General Medicine, Traditional Medicine, and Preventive Medicine; Dentist, Medical Technique, Medical Imaging Technique, Nursing, and Public Health
• Graduate training program: Master and Doctoral degrees in Biomedical Science training, teaching fundamental modules in Master's programs and Resident's programs in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Hematology and Blood Transfusion.
• Participating in the Master of Biomedical Technology joint training program between Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Sassari University, Italy
• Instructing graduate thesis and scientific dissertations for undergraduate and postgraduate students

4. RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION

• Leading and participating in many scientific research projects, including 1 National level project, 1 Provincial level project, 4 Ministerial level projects, 3 Hue University level projects, and many HueUMP level projects
• Being the first author and co-author of 24 articles published in international journals from Web of Science and SCOPUS systems
• Being the first author of many articles published in prestigious local magazines
• Achieved many scientific research awards such as: Vietnamese Talent Awards, Hue Imperial Capital Awards, Youth Science and Technology Innovation Awards

5. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

• Cooperating in postgraduate training with Sassari University, Italy
• Collaborating in scientific research with American, Italian, Japanese and Korean experts
• Guiding foreign students from United States, Italy, Sweden... in practice at Genetic laboratories.
