1. INTRODUCTION

The Department of Radiology was formerly a radiology majored team. Before 1975, Dr Chu Bao was the head in charge, followed by Dr. Nguyen Lai, Dr. Duong Duc Ton, and Dr. Bui Binh Tho. In 1980, two lecturers, Dr. Hoang Minh Loi and Dr. Le Trong Khoan were joint the team. In 1988, by adding three lecturers, the Department of Radiology was officially established, including five staffs, Dr. Hoang Minh Loi and Dr. Le Trong Khoan were Chair and Vice Chair of the Department.

The department has currently 21 regular staffs, including three Assocociate Professors and two PhD. Most have been trained abroad.

3. EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Undergraduate training

Since its establishment, the Department has been in charge of undergraduate training for General Practitioners (6-year and 4-year systems). The curriculum was basically in-class lectures and image interpretation for 4th year (6-year program) and 2th year medical students (4-year program). In recent years, along with the curriculum reform of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the Department has participated in many other teaching programs in Dentistry, Traditional medicine, Preventive medicine, Physiotherapy and Radiological technology.

Graduate training

The Department of Radiology marked its first graduate training in 1999, started with the training program of Specialist level I of Diagnostic Imaging. The average number of students per year is from 5 to 20 students.

Since its launch in 2006, 5-15 Master students involve in the training program of Master of Science in Diagnostic Imaging every year and 3-9 radiology residents are also recruited.
In 2007, the Department started the training of Specialist level II in Diagnostic imaging; each course has 2-5 doctors.

In addition to the graduate training of Diagnostic Imaging, the Department has also contributed to the graduate curriculum of other specialties.

Since 2014, the PhD course in Diagnostic Imaging has been started.

4. RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION

- Radiology is one of the growing specialties in the Central region, especially in Hue. Regarding scientific research, many works have been published in domestic and international medical journals. Every year, staffs and graduate students actively participate in annual national meetings and publish their researches in domestic medical journals.

- In recent years, multi-level research topics, from institutional to state, have been conducted by the Department.

- Conferences/Symposiums/Workshops have also been frequently organized with the participation of domestic and internationals experts. The Department contributes core members to all activities of Thua Thien Hue Association of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.

  • Oncology

5. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

- International cooperation has been carried out regularly since 2000, with many exchange programs of undergraduate and graduate training. Traditional partners are France, Japan, Korea, Germany, Taiwan, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, USA… Thanks to this mutual cooperation, many staffs have involved in various long-term and short-term training courses abroad. The Department has been regularly supported with teaching materials such as textbook, journals and medical supplies.

- Every year, domestic and international experts come to delivery lectures, CME as well as hands-on practice, especially GREF (Groupe de Radiologues Enseignants Francais). CME are organized frequently involving different sub-specialties, targeting not only on-site graduate students but also local and regional radiology practicing physicians.

- The Department’s staffs co-author with French experts to publish Radiology reference books in Vietnam.

- Young staffs have also been introduced to many renowned hospitals for short-term training.
