1. INTRODUCTION

Hue Medical University was formally established in 1959. From September 1960 to October 1961, the university began enrollment of medical students with 27 students. The Department of Surgery was also established since then.

2. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE AND PERSONNEL

The department currently has 30 lecturers, including 1 Professor, 6 Assoc. Professor, 2 PhD, 14 MSc (4 PhD students, 10 main lecturers, 8 MD, 1 Bachelor). Nearly 90% of lecturers have been educated abroad.

3. TRAINING AND TREATMENT

- Undergraduate training: Full-time students (General Practitioner 3^rd 4^th and 6^th year, Dentist, General Practitioner following transitional courses, Medical Engineering, Nurses…)

- Postgraduate training: Postgraduate trainees in the surgical profession are trained under the unified program, including: PhD of Gastrointestionology, Master, Resident Physician, Specialist Level II of Urology, Specialist Level II of General Surgery… The department has also organized postgraduate courses in Can Tho, Binh Dinh, Da Nang, Binh Thuan, Dong Nai and Khanh Hoa.

The department has adopted active learning methods in the theoretical and clinical teaching.  The method of evaluation has also improved, the test has become the main method in evaluating students.

The department has developed curricula for 6-year GPs, 4-year GPs and other training systems and has created a relatively comprehensive set of curricula for undergraduate students and graduate students. In addition, a significant number of master's theses, Specialist Level II theses, PhD theses educated at the Department of Surgery are also a valuable reference source for students.

4. RESEARCH AND APPLICATION OF SCIENCE-TECHNOLOGY:

In the field of scientific research, in the past, the lecturers of the Department of Surgery participated in scientific research works from the state level (3 researches), ministerial level (18), university level (70); all of them was accepted and appreciated. The results of scientific research have been applied in practice in education and treatment of patients at the Hue University Hospital and Hue Central Hospital

5. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Regarding international relations, the Department had close links with Hue Central Hospital and Hue University Hospital to actively expand the relationship of training, scientific research, technology transfer with foreign universities and international scientific organizations, such as University of Rennes-France, the University of Freiburg, Lubeck University, Bochum (Germany), ADVASE Association, Luxembourg ADS Association - France, Royal Society for Cardiac Surgery Australia and Melbourne, the American REI Association, the Singapore Surgical Society, surgery for children with disabilities in JICA program (Japan), CI (Taiwan) ... Thanks to that, scientific conferences specialized in certain fields such as vascular surgery, hip surgery, plastic surgery, hand surgery, laparoscopy, disability surgery program, open heart surgeries, organ transplants, kidney transplant... were held not merely theoretical but also directly operated at the Hue University Hospital and Hue Central Hospital. With the adept team of surgeons from Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Hue Central Hospital, cutting-edge techniques have been quickly transferred, resulting in achieving good results.
